Quick answer

Intercom vs Help Scout: the short answer

Intercom and Help Scout both manage customer conversations, but for different teams. Intercom is a messaging-first platform with Messenger, a shared inbox and the Fin AI Agent, sold per seat in Essential, Advanced and Expert plans. Help Scout is an email-first shared inbox with Docs, Beacon chat and AI Answers, sold per user in Free, Standard, Plus and Pro plans.

The sources reviewed describe the choice as simplicity against ambition. Help Scout is described as having the more human, email-like inbox, a free plan for five users and cheaper seats. Intercom is described as stronger on in-app messaging, multi-channel engagement and a more capable AI agent, at a higher price, and two guides report that Salesforce agreed in June 2026 to acquire Fin, Intercom's renamed company.

We compare what independent 2026 sources and both vendors' own pages support and mark the rest Unknown. Intercom's learning-centre page is vendor-authored, and the resolution rates it quotes are vendor claims. No winner is declared: the better fit depends on your channels, team size and AI volume.

All Help Scout plans and sources

Help Scout is cheaper on seats at every comparable tier. Our arithmetic on reported annual prices for 10 agents gives about $3,000 a year on Help Scout Standard ($25 x 10 x 12), $5,400 on Plus ($45 x 10 x 12) and $9,000 on Pro ($75 x 10 x 12), against $3,480 on Intercom Essential at $29 ($29 x 10 x 12), or $4,680 at $39, and $10,200 on Advanced ($85 x 10 x 12). Help Scout's free plan for up to five users has no equivalent at Intercom.

AI meters narrow or widen the gap. At 2,000 AI resolutions a month, Intercom's own page puts Fin at about $1,980 and Help Scout AI Answers at about $1,500, a difference of about $480 a month. Help Scout charges only on successful resolutions and lets you cap monthly spending, while Fin is billed per outcome at $0.99. Resolution rates drive the real result, and both are vendor claims.

Because Fin can reportedly run on other help desks, some teams compare the AI layer separately from the inbox. Intercom's Essential price is reported at two figures and the company is subject to a pending acquisition, so confirm current terms and contract length with both vendors.

Considerations

Intercom vs Help Scout: implementation, ecosystem, AI and security.

Ease of implementation and usability

We did not test setup or migration for either product. Guides describe Help Scout as very easy to learn and Intercom as more capable but moderate in learning curve, with a more complex interface. Pilot one real queue in each, using the same conversations.

Integrations and ecosystem

Intercom lists a Salesforce integration on Advanced and has many native integrations for messaging and product data. Help Scout lists 100+ integrations on Standard, including Slack, Shopify, and Salesforce and Jira on Plus. Counts were not verified, so check the systems you use.

AI capabilities

Intercom's Fin is positioned as a full AI agent that resolves multi-step conversations using procedures and data connectors. Help Scout's AI Answers is described as a knowledge-base chatbot in the Beacon widget that answers questions and escalates the rest. Both vendors claim resolution rates in the mid-70s, which we could not verify, so test both on your own conversations.

Security, deployment and administration

Intercom lists SSO or SAML, custom roles and HIPAA eligibility on Expert. Help Scout lists advanced permissions on Plus and, per one guide, SOC 2 and HIPAA on Pro. We did not review certifications or data residency, so request current security documentation and, for Intercom, the status of the Salesforce transaction.

Strengths and limitations

Intercom and Help Scout: each option, in balance.

Intercom

Strengths and limitations from the profile

Strengths
  • Fin AI Agent is available on every plan and is billed only when it resolves a conversation.
  • A chat-first suite combines inbox, Messenger and help center in one product.
  • Expert adds SSO, custom roles and HIPAA eligibility for larger or regulated teams.
Limitations
  • Per-seat prices are high compared with many help desks, and the jump from Essential to Advanced is large.
  • A second meter for Fin resolutions means the AI bill scales with support volume.
  • Sources report that a resolution can be counted after 24 hours without a customer reply, so billable outcomes may exceed explicit confirmations.
  • Reports of a rebrand and a pending Salesforce acquisition mean roadmap and pricing may change.

Help Scout

Strengths and limitations from the profile

Strengths
  • A real free plan for up to five users, with a Docs site and 100 contacts a month.
  • Paid plans have unlimited contacts and transparent per-user pricing, which makes budgeting predictable.
  • The email-like inbox is simple for small teams that find ticketing tools heavy.
  • AI Answers charges only when the bot resolves a conversation, with a free trial period.
Limitations
  • Per-inbox and per-Docs-site metering adds cost for teams with many brands or departments.
  • AI Answers is a separate per-resolution meter on top of seats.
  • The free plan is capped at 100 contacts a month, 10 saved replies and 10 tags, and has no workflows.
  • The Pro plan carries a reported 10-user minimum, and pricing models have changed repeatedly.
