Quick answer

Zendesk vs Help Scout: the short answer

Zendesk and Help Scout are both help desks, but they sit at different scales. Zendesk is a ticketing-first platform with an omnichannel Suite, sold per agent from a low ticketing entry plan up to Enterprise, with AI agents billed per automated resolution. Help Scout is built around a shared inbox that feels like email, sold per user in Free, Standard, Plus and Pro plans with a Docs knowledge base and Beacon chat.

The sources reviewed describe a simplicity-against-scale choice. Help Scout is described as calmer, cheaper for small teams and transparent on AI at $0.75 per resolution. Zendesk is described as broader on channels, voice, routing and enterprise governance, with a larger marketplace, but its per-resolution AI price is not published and Copilot is a separate add-on.

We compare what independent 2026 sources support and mark the rest Unknown. Two sources are the vendors' own comparison pages, so we treat their claims as vendor-authored. No winner is declared: the better fit depends on team size, channels and how much AI you plan to run.

All Help Scout plans and sources

Help Scout is cheaper at comparable sizes. Our arithmetic on reported annual prices for 25 agents gives about $7,500 a year on Help Scout Standard ($25 x 25 x 12), $13,500 on Plus ($45 x 25 x 12) and $22,500 on Pro ($75 x 25 x 12), against $5,700 on Zendesk Support Team ($19 x 25 x 12), $16,500 on Suite Team ($55 x 25 x 12) and $34,500 on Suite Professional ($115 x 25 x 12). Zendesk's $19 plan is cheaper but is ticketing only; omnichannel and AI agents start at Suite Team.

The AI meter dominates at volume. At 1,000 AI resolutions a month, Help Scout's $0.75 rate costs about $750. If none fell inside Zendesk's included allowance (the allowance size is not published), the reported $1.50 to $2.00 range would imply $1,500 to $2,000, so treat that as a ceiling. Copilot adds $50 per agent: for 25 agents on Suite Professional, about $15,000 a year more ($50 x 25 x 12).

Neither seat price is the whole bill. One guide warns that Help Scout's AI Answers can become a real line item as success grows and that Pro has a reported 10-user minimum. Zendesk's voice, workforce and QA add-ons are priced separately. Get written quotes for your channels and AI volume, and confirm current terms.

Considerations

Zendesk vs Help Scout: implementation, ecosystem, AI and security.

Ease of implementation and usability

We did not test setup or migration for either product. One vendor comparison claims Help Scout goes live in hours to days against weeks to months for Zendesk, which is a competitor's claim and should be tested. Both offer trials, so pilot one real queue in each.

Integrations and ecosystem

Zendesk is described as having a very large app marketplace, and Help Scout lists 100+ integrations on Standard. Counts were not independently verified, so check each marketplace for your CRM, billing and e-commerce tools.

AI capabilities

Help Scout's AI Answers is a customer-facing chatbot billed only when it resolves a conversation, with a strict counting rule reported by one guide. Zendesk sells autonomous AI agents billed per resolution plus a Copilot add-on for agents. Vendor-claimed resolution rates differ and were not independently verified, so test both on your own conversations.

Security, deployment and administration

Zendesk lists sandboxes, audit logs and custom roles on higher Suite plans, while Help Scout's Pro plan is described as carrying enterprise security. We did not review certifications or data residency for either product, so request current security documentation.

Strengths and limitations

Zendesk and Help Scout: each option, in balance.

Zendesk

Strengths and limitations from the profile

Strengths
  • A clear plan ladder from ticketing-only to a full omnichannel Suite.
  • AI agents are included in plans, with an allowance of automated resolutions per agent.
  • Higher tiers add governance features such as sandboxes, audit logs and custom roles.
Limitations
  • Per-agent pricing means costs rise with headcount, and monthly billing is reported about 30 percent higher.
  • AI resolutions beyond the allowance are billed per resolution, so costs vary with volume.
  • Copilot, voice, quality assurance and workforce management are priced as add-ons.
  • Enterprise pricing is quote-only, and older guides mention a Suite Growth plan that no longer appears on the main page.

Help Scout

Strengths and limitations from the profile

Strengths
  • A real free plan for up to five users, with a Docs site and 100 contacts a month.
  • Paid plans have unlimited contacts and transparent per-user pricing, which makes budgeting predictable.
  • The email-like inbox is simple for small teams that find ticketing tools heavy.
  • AI Answers charges only when the bot resolves a conversation, with a free trial period.
Limitations
  • Per-inbox and per-Docs-site metering adds cost for teams with many brands or departments.
  • AI Answers is a separate per-resolution meter on top of seats.
  • The free plan is capped at 100 contacts a month, 10 saved replies and 10 tags, and has no workflows.
  • The Pro plan carries a reported 10-user minimum, and pricing models have changed repeatedly.
