Linear vs Jira: the short answer
Linear and Jira are two of the most compared issue trackers for software teams. Linear is a keyboard-driven, opinionated tracker sold per user in Free, Basic, Business and Enterprise plans. Jira, from Atlassian, is a configurable work tracking product sold per user in Free, Standard, Premium and Enterprise plans, with deep links to the rest of the Atlassian suite.
The sources reviewed describe opposite philosophies. Linear is praised for speed and focus and described as the default choice for product teams without an enterprise constraint. Jira is described as the configurable enterprise standard, preferred where custom workflows, audit trails and IT service management matter, and where teams already use Confluence and other Atlassian tools.
We compare what independent 2026 sources support and mark the rest Unknown. Linear raised its prices in 2026, and Jira's rates are sliding and differ slightly by source, so we show the figures as reported. No winner is declared: the better fit depends on how much configuration you need.
- Software and product teams that value speed and a focused workflow
- Teams moving from Jira that want a simpler issue tracker
- Teams using AI coding agents that connect to issues through MCP
- Enterprises that need configurable workflows, audit trails and ITSM
- Teams already on Confluence, Bitbucket and other Atlassian tools
- Organisations that need a self-managed deployment

All Jira plans and sourcesJira is slightly cheaper per user at the entry tier and the two are close at the upper tier. Our arithmetic on reported annual prices for 25 users gives about $2,373 a year on Jira Standard ($7.91 x 25 x 12) against $3,000 on Linear Basic ($10 x 25 x 12), and about $4,362 on Jira Premium ($14.54 x 25 x 12) against $4,800 on Linear Business ($16 x 25 x 12). Guides that quote Linear's earlier $8 and $14 prices show Linear as cheaper, so check which price list they used.
Jira's per-user rate slides with team size, so its real total can differ from this multiplication. Jira's cost can also rise with Marketplace apps, Atlassian Guard and companion products such as Jira Service Management, while Linear's published plans bundle more in the base plan. Linear also added metered AI credits for some features.
AI placement is contested. One guide says Linear's AI features start on Business and Jira's on Premium, while Atlassian's pricing page, as summarised in our profile, lists Rovo on paid plans. Prices and plan limits change often, so confirm current terms.

Linear vs Jira: implementation, ecosystem, AI and security.
Ease of implementation and usability
We did not test setup or migration for either product. Guides describe Linear as quick to adopt for software teams and Jira as needing configuration for workflows, permissions and boards. One guide recommends Linear for any team without an enterprise requirement locking it to Jira, which is an opinion and not a finding.
Integrations and ecosystem
Linear connects to GitHub, Figma and Slack and supports MCP for AI coding agents. Jira connects to the Atlassian suite, including Confluence and Bitbucket, and to the Marketplace. One guide argues the Atlassian integration depth is hard to match for teams already invested. Check the specific tools you use.
AI capabilities
Linear lists AI triage, summarisation and an agent, with MCP support for codebase-aware triage per one guide. Jira lists Rovo and Atlassian Intelligence for summaries, writing help and agents. Guides lean towards Linear for AI maturity inside the issue tracker, and towards Jira for enterprise teams on Atlassian. We did not test output quality.
Security, deployment and administration
Linear lists SAML, SCIM and audit controls on Enterprise. Jira offers permissions on Standard, Atlassian Guard for SSO and SCIM, and audit features on higher tiers, with a self-managed Data Center option for organisations that need it. We did not review certifications or data residency, so request current security documentation.
Linear and Jira: each option, in balance.
Linear
Strengths and limitations from the profile
- Reviewers describe a fast, opinionated interface as Linear's main differentiator for engineering teams.
- A real free plan and short, clear paid ladder make it easy to start and budget.
- Cycles, projects, roadmaps and a triage inbox cover the core software planning workflow.
- Triage Intelligence and Linear MCP connect issues with AI tools and coding agents.
- Strong GitHub, GitLab and Slack integrations link issues to code and conversations.
- Linear is an internal engineering tool, not a customer help desk.
- Prices rose in 2026 and AI credits for Coding Sessions and Loops add usage-based cost.
- The Free plan is capped at 250 issues, and Enterprise features such as SAML and audit logs need a custom plan.
- It is cloud-only, with no self-hosted option.
- Guest access can require paid seats, and Basic and Business are annual-commitment plans at the lowest price.
Jira
Strengths and limitations from the profile
- Agile boards, backlogs and roadmaps are built in, and the Free plan supports up to 10 users.
- Rovo AI search, chat and agents are included on every paid plan, with a clear credit allowance per tier.
- A tiered plan ladder takes teams from Free to Enterprise with multiple instances, unlimited automation and analytics.
- Tight integration with Confluence and other Atlassian products suits teams that document in Confluence.
- Per-user pricing scales with team size, and reviewers describe it as expensive for very small teams.
- Enterprise pricing is quote-only and available only on annual terms.
- Marketplace add-ons and separately priced products such as Jira Service Management can raise total cost.
- Published per-user prices differ between sources because of sliding tiers, so budgeting needs a current quote.
Linear or Jira: which fits which situation?
No overall winner is declared. The better choice depends on the criteria that matter most to you, so test both against your own requirements.
Choose Linear if you…
- Software and product teams that value speed and a focused workflow
- Teams moving from Jira that want a simpler issue tracker
- Teams using AI coding agents that connect to issues through MCP
Choose Jira if you…
- Enterprises that need configurable workflows, audit trails and ITSM
- Teams already on Confluence, Bitbucket and other Atlassian tools
- Organisations that need a self-managed deployment
Switching between Linear and Jira.
Moving from Jira to Linear means mapping issue types and workflows to Linear's more opinionated model, importing issues, and recreating automations and custom fields that Linear may not support. Moving the other way means rebuilding workflows from scratch. Import one team's backlog, run a cycle, and compare before moving everyone.
- Export a sample of your data and test an import into the other product.
- List the automations, integrations and permissions you would need to rebuild.
- Pilot with one team before a full cut-over.
- Check contract terms and notice periods with both vendors.
